TWENTY-FIVE years in the past in Russia, Zavoisky made the 1st experimen tal commentary of electron spin resonances; and a yr later Purcell, Torrey and Pound at Harvard and Bloch, Hansen and Packard at Stanford ('The Harvard of the West') saw nuclear magnetic resonances for the 1st time. In either instances (ESR and NMR) the phenomena were formerly expected, and Gorter - definitely the most unfortunate experimenters of our time - had made his noble makes an attempt to discover magnetic resonances.

Boysen same time, pulmonary artery pressure increases, as does both the systolic and diastolic pressure. Central venous pressure also increases but there is an overall increase in pulmonary vascular resistance. Cardiac output decreases, but not severely since, with higher volumes of aspiration of freshwater, there is some movement of fluid into the vascular space with the effect of some protection of cardiac output. Mixed venous oxygen saturation during the same time decreases precipitously, again, partly due to gas exchange in the lung and partly due to decreased cardiac output.
Lung lavage. The Gallium scan localises areas of acute or chronic inflammation at the alveolar level and is not influenced by inflammatory airway disease. Gallium - 67 citrate is given intravenously and the patient is scanned 48 hours later. The mechanisms of gallium - 67 uptake in regions of inflammation are unknown but most of the gallium is taken up in macrophages with only a small uptake in neutrophils. Most studies of Gallium - 67 uptake have been reported in patients with sarcoidosis or in fibrosing alveolitis.
