Huntâ s start in life did not auger well. Unlike H. L. B. was no charmed poker player, or wildcatter, or even a distant relative. Hunt was born in 1927 into a poor family of five brothers and one sister. At about age ten, he started working in one of his uncleâ s sawmills. He left school at age eleven without being able to read or write. 45 46 Hunt spent his first twelve years of marriage on the road driving for different trucking firms out of Little Rock and, later, Dallas and St. Louis. One of his regular routes was a 365-mile stretch between Little Rock and St.

He asked the company to lend him $10 million. In return, he promised to buy 150 million pounds of raw materials from ARCO every year for the next thirteen years. Finally, he persuaded Shell to guarantee $12 million of a $29 million bank loan and to defer $3 million of the purchase price until later. With that Huntsman bought a $42 million plant. Although most of the financing came from other peopleâ s pockets, as is frequently the case with the biggest risk takers, Huntsman says he could not have convinced any of the other parties to buy in if he hadnâ t been prepared to put all his possessions on the line: â They want to see some type of equity, and if you donâ t have a rich uncle, the only equity you can put up is whatever you ownâ your house and any other assets you may have.

The farmers would load the shavings into their truck with a shovel. But Hunt devised a contraption he described as a â playhouse on stiltsâ that was filled with wood shavings. All the farmers had to do was back their truck up and pull a lever to fill up. The device saved the farmers a lot of time and effort, for which they paid the young boy $4 a load. Pretty soon Hunt was selling four or five loads a day. The lesson: There was good money to be made from poultry litterâ if only he could work out how.
