Frankly, I don’t remember a big portion of it, which is a completely normal response considering that memory loss is retroactive in most traumatic events. It’s really frightening when you reach for a thought and it isn’t there. Or someone reminds you of a conversation you just conducted and you can’t remember you even spoke to that person. I started to lose trust in my own brain. And it was embarrassing when people would have to remind me of what I said or did or promised to do tomorrow.

Today we laugh about my tumultuous past, including being a sensitive child in an environment that was less than perfect. Just like so many families of the post-Vietnam era, we basically shoved a lot of things under the carpet that were later recognized as traumatic. In those years, the men didn’t seek counseling, as they were in denial that anything was wrong. They simply had to be men and get on with their lives. In my parents’ defense, and I love them both dearly, they didn’t have words or theories about “conscious parenting” back in those days.

To that end, it was a lot of late nights, constant phone calls, and troubleshooting problems to make sure that the business consistently ran smoothly. Yet I’d always wander to the self-help section in the bookstore to figure out what was wrong with me. I had issues with boundaries and found myself in tears a lot of the time.
