Awareness of others/empathy The complementary skill to self-awareness is “other-awareness”— being quick to pick up on how other people are feeling from what they say and do, and drawing accurate conclusions from this about what they are thinking. This information about the thoughts, beliefs, and intentions of those you work with is invaluable in so many ways.

The recognition that hardship often produces an opposite result—increased resilience—led to further studies and a more detailed understanding of what makes the difference between a positive and negative outcome. This work identified a factor known as explanatory or attributional style, which is the way everyone typically explains (in their own minds) what has happened, and specifically the extent to which they attribute positive or negative events to personal qualities that are long-lasting and that apply to many different situations.
