After losing a congressional race some twenty years earlier, he stuck to his political pursuits and was elected to the New York State Senate in 1914.

JOHN HAROLD JOHNSON (1918– ) Managing editor of his school paper and business manager of his high school yearbook, Johnson went on to the University of Chicago and Northwestern University. He later conceived the idea of a magazine for African Americans and with a $500 loan started Negro Digest in 1942.
