I think the program allowed you to record about 20 seconds of audio, so I made a short recording stating my name and announcing to the world how cool I was. The final step was using the program and the Datasette to get my voice recording into the computer. After a couple of days of trial and error, I finally got the program to work. The end results were, well, not that impressive. I mean, it was extremely cool to hear my own voice coming from a computerʼs speaker for the first time, but the quality wasnʼt that great.
Macintosh and Atari also had computers that could easily outperform my beloved C64; however, I hardly knew anyone who owned any of those machines. Most home computer owners were hedging their bets on the IBM platform, which is what most businesses and schools were rapidly moving to. The problem was, IBM PCs couldnʼt play games better than a Commodore 64 could – at least not in the beginning. Early PC games utilized CGA video, which ran at 320x200 resolution (the same as a Commodore) but could only display 4 colors at a time versus the 64ʼs 16 colors.
We decided that we needed to go underground for this project and pick alternate personalities for the project. Klatu became Paladin, I became Metallica, and together we became the OK Krackers. The first few releases by OKK were, by anyoneʼs standard, lame. The first things we released were simply games that other people had cracked, but that no one in Oklahoma had seen. Back then, when a group “cracked” a game (removed its copy protection), they would add an intro screen to the front of the program.
