Both in his concern to link diverse social phenomena to wider concepts and in his desire for a supradisciplinary approach to things, Horkheimer is indirectly expressing the influence of the Hungarian Marxist, Georg Lukacs. Films, radio, television, popular music and newspapers all fell under the withering gaze of Adorno in particular, as all, in their way, blithely fostered the illusion that the ‘good life’ was to be found in the commodity. If the good life had something to do with happiness, with sensuousness, and of finding meaning in life, the products of the culture industries did not lead the subject towards their realisation, but diverted it from them. Culture had once been a storehouse of elements such as truth and beauty, and even though these carried the stamp of class relations they nevertheless lit up a potential for human fulfillment.
Yet the bleak nature of its culture critique has become almost a byword for Critical Theory itself. Certainly by the mid 1940s, culture was being seen as both an expression of, and a causal element in, society’s stasis. For Critical Theorists, culture was notable for being distinctly undynamic, in fact Adorno coined the disparaging term, ‘culture industry’ to capture the extent to which it had been overtaken by industrial forces. His work is sometimes seen as an attack on popular or mass culture generally, but this is wide of the mark.
