The fundamentals of propulsion and the progress made in specific areas are covered by a number of books, monographs, and archive publications. However, books presenting the worldwide state of the art written by the performers and compiled into one volume are very limited. This book is an attempt to provide such a source of reference, for practicing engineers and graduate students, or as a text book for a graduate course in Advanced Topics in Combustion or Propulsion. Propulsion systems of today and the future require increased and more rapid energy-release rates from smaller and more efficient combustors, in order to meet the demand for increased speed and range and for operational flexibility.
Third, the study is capable of focusing on the inlet flow conditions since these are more difficult to control and determine in experimental setups as opposed to DNS. The inlet flow conditions strongly aff'ect the mixing characteristics behind the step, which in turn influence the volumetric heat release by combustion. Another advantage of DNS is that it is an excellent source for a rich database of various statistics which can be used for model validation. The detailed information that one can obtain with DNS of the two-phase flow is virtually impossible to generate with experiment and will greatly help in understanding the physics involved in two-phase flows as well as validation of relevant models.
It showed that an adaptive low-order, posi-cast control is able to effectively control a largescale combustor model with satisfactory results. The test rig to demonstrate active pattern factor control was completed, and tests were run at higher combustion pressures for better characterization of the spray pattern. HIGH-SPEED JET NOISE REDUCTION Decades of research have been conducted by various universities worldwide and agencies, such as NASA, and aircraft engines and airframe companies to mitigate jet noise.
