It can be machined ‘dry’ very easily if care is taken not to overheat it, as this can cause the tool to deform the material rather than cut it. The author always cuts nylon without a lubricant, but care must be taken not to get the material too hot. Nylon screws and bolts make a useful ‘designed point of failure’ for applications where a ‘sacrificial’ fixing is an advantage, such as wing mountings where failure on impact may save structural damage. Nylon is available in the form of rods, blocks, sheets and bars, and also in a variety of nuts, screws, washers and bolts.
Form tools often have quite a large area of cutting edge in contact with the work, which sometimes causes ‘chatter’; this may be obviated by slowing the speed, checking centre height, and (if the work permits) taking smaller ‘bites’ along the form and only using the complete shape during the finishing cut. Many modellers may not have used tool bits before, relying on ready-made tools which are all right up to a point, but do not offer the versatility of hand-shaped tool bits. A guide to help the modeller who may not be experienced in the grinding of tool bits is shown in Fig.

Tool holders have the added advantage of being useful safety aids when grinding and sharpening because there is ‘more to hold on to’.
