Hence environmental security could thus be seen within the emerging context of critical security studies which deal with social, economic, political and military security. These various securities impact on each other and cannot be separated in any sense other than for analytical convenience. Given the close association between livelihood security and resource security, I have consciously emphasised environmental security and the specificity of the environmental politics which it generates, whilst attempting to elucidate its linkages and implications for other types of security (social, economic and political).

It is therefore worth tracing briefly the context within which land alienation took place. The following section offers a reinterpretation of land policies, colonial and postcolonial, treating them as a continuum linking land struggle to livelihood struggle.
